Scholarships

Two scholarships are currently supported by the Brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma-Gamma Xi.  These scholarships are in memory of departed Brothers.

Boyd Spikerman Scholarship

Background:

Boyd Spikerman grew up in Park Forest, IL and graduated from Rich East High School.  He enrolled in Fall 1970 and his field of study was Criminal Justice with emphasis in Corrections.  Known as Spike, he was a member of the Omicron Pledge Class, he pledged in the fall of 1972.  Spike participated in numerous activities while a Brother at Gamma Xi, and was known for his musical portrayal of Sha Na Na on the radiator in the Front Room at the House.  Always with a smile, he was ready to hang out with a Brother.

Spike was particularly challenged by Math and finally graduated in 1983; sadly, he lost his life in January 1984 while in the line of duty at the Federal Correctional Institution at Oxford, WI.  In memory of their classmate, brother, and friend, a group of friends established the Boyd Spikerman Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1984.

Thus far over $70,000 has been given to 58 deserving CJ students.

Criteria for applying:

The income from the funds shall be used to provide scholarships for upper-class students majoring in criminal Justice with an emphasis in corrections.  The Chairperson of the Criminal Justice Department together with the faculty advisor of Sigma Tau Gamma, shall be responsible for the number of awards, the size of the award, and the selection of the recipients and the presentation of the award.

Students can apply through the UW-Platteville Financial Aid Office.

Andy Wimer Scholarship

Background:

Andy Wimer grew up in Cassville, Wisconsin. He graduated from UW-Platteville in 1975 with a degree in Accounting. Andy was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma and was involved in many activities on campus. As an Active and as an Alumni, he was involved in Gamma Xi leadership, management of the House, and coordinating a number of activities. Andy passed away in 2008 after battling leukemia. 

In memory of their classmate, brother, and friend, a group of friends established the Andrew Wimer Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2010. 

Thus far over  $21,000 has been awarded to 18 students.

Criteria for applying:

Students can apply through the UW-Platteville Financial Aid Office if the following criteria are met:

  1. The recipient shall be a continuing student with at least a sophomore standing and a declared major in Accounting.
  2. Preference shall be given to students involved in extra-curricular activities at the University such as intramural athletics, Greek life, and/or professional organizations.
  3. Consideration shall be given to all accounting students in good standing with a GPA above 2.8.
  4. Recipients must demonstrate financial need.
